Read along with us

Throughout their time in Turkey, our students do a range of readings related to sites visited and concepts discussed. Some of these are ancient primary sources, others are theoretical discussions of how nations come into being, and some are academic articles offering unique perspectives on the things are students will see. If you would like to get a sense of what our students are learning about, check out some of their readings:

  • The introduction to Edward Said's Orientalism (1978).
  • Dio Cassius, Roman History, 75.10-14 (3rd century CE).
  • Procopius, "On the Great Church (Hagia Sophia)" (545 CE).
  • John of Damascus, "In Defense of Icons" (730 CE).
  • Selections from John Freely, Istanbul: The Imperial City (1998).
  • Selections from Hugh Pope and Nicole Pope Turkey Unveiled: A History of Modern Turkey (2011).
  • James Walters, "Egyptian Religions in Ephesos" in Ephesos, Metropolis of Asia: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Its Archaeology, Religion, and Culture (2004).
  • R. R. R. Smith, "The Imperial Reliefs from the Sebasteion at Aphrodisias" in The Journal of Roman Studies, Vol. 77 (1987).
